Well, I was promoting the first of the 2 aforementioned articles, when Max commented his opinion on the industry. He believes the scene is failing because it became commercial as opposed to staying in the underground and true to it’s roots. I did agree, however I had to ask myself: “Can I really blame artist for growing mainstream” which then lead me to ask: Why don’t people buy music.
I’ve come across a lot of industry stories, where artists have been close to being signed but the label doubted they could sell no matter how big of a buzz they had. That’s because their target audience was the people that don’t buy music. I question why that is. We love the artists we listen to. Why did Lean & Bop have to be J Hus’ first release? Why couldn’t it have been ‘Dem Boy Paigon’? we all now what one of two had more of an impact on the culture.
I think by now we are well aware that studio time at a good studio costs upwards of £25p/h, Music videos need budgets of £300+ to be half decent, getting a video up on Link Up Tv or GRM Daily costs upwards of £150, so why do we struggle to pay 99p-£4.99 for music we live with?
Again the question of “Why Don’t We Buy Music?” arises. We are very concerned with designer culture (people that don’t contribute anything to our lives) but yet our artists can’t sell the songs that impact us the most. I think the thought process is backwards and needs to change. I am guilty too, I don’t purchase all the music I listen too and I am therefore not exempt of the criticism. I am however willing to take the steps to support the artist I listen to when they release music genuine to their style.
This is something I hope will change. I will never stop referencing the fact one of my industry friends almost took the commercial life because of the lack of sales (YouTube views & mixtape downloads were at an all time high).
I believe for this scene to truly prosper, their needs to be a lane for people to be true to their artistic values and still be able to profit and give us more of the music we love. The change starts with us! Let me know your thoughts.
Peace & Love!
